Thanks for this article. It's important for us white "evangelical"(biblical good news bringing) Christians to join with the black church in practicing non-violent, rather than vitriolic resistance to those attitudes and actions which spring from hate and deceit.
Indeed. I've been trying to read more about the civil rights movement in recent years, something we don't study enough in terms of its Christian commitments to non-violence and suffering. But I don't know much about it if I am honest, in knowledge or experience. I do commend Rev. Brown's article, who is himself African-American.
Two sources were helpful for me. Strength to Love (a collection of MLK's sermons with a forward from Coretta) and the biography of John Lewis which I mention in my article today:
Well, the idea of the article is to have that kind of self-awareness of our own partisanship and to try to die to it, as our Lord has commanded us, "Love your enemies."
